STORY: During the lockdown, my husband could not work. We didn’t have any income so we couldn’t pay the rent, but the owner of these apartments didn’t care at all. He kicked us out during the lockdown. It was horrible. I’m 8 months pregnant, but he cut our water and even threatened us. We had to call the police because we had nowhere else to go and we were in the middle of the lockdown. No one was allowed outside.

Being undocumented and pregnant is extra challenging. I’m home all day and every single morning when my husband leaves for work, I worry if he will come home at night or if he’s going to be caught and deported. I’m inside this tiny apartment all day, hoping my husband comes home at night. It’s very stressful. The hospital here is not accommodating either. Since we’re not insured, they want us to sign a payment agreement for the birth. A natural birth costs Nafl. 9.000,- and a caesarean costs Nafl. 13.500,-. The clinic Salú Pa Tur helps us with check-ups, but not with the birth. Nevertheless, I’m very glad that they exist, because at least I feel like there’s some support for me and the baby, but I feel unsure about the future. I try to only think of today, not about the future. I have to keep going and stay positive.

The food packages are a big help. I can make some good meals with them, but we have several other monthly costs we have to pay. We pay Nafl. 650,- rent and that doesn’t include water or electricity. My husband has just started working again, thank God. He wants to make extra now, to pay the due rent from during the lockdown. If the owner kicks us out again, we have nowhere to go and the baby is due any day now. He keeps coming over to remind us that rent is due all the time. Our 6-year-old is traumatized by what happened with this man. Every time he sees him, he runs away to hide.

My message is that Curaçao be nicer to undocumented people. We live in fear. We’re not all criminals. That there be more help for women who are pregnant. I don’t want people to pity me, because I’m not waiting on others to come and save me. I’m here to take care of myself and my family, but reality is that even being honest and working hard, it’s not enough.

My thanks go out to all the people who helped with this project:
